Seven of FOX Sports Arizona’s staff members served on an annual speaker panel for students in Arizona State University’s Sports Business Association – a student driven organization for students wishing to work in the sports industry. The discussion took place at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication last Thursday night (Oct. 22).

The discussion was moderated by Jody Jackson – one of FOX Sports Arizona’s hosts and reporters. Members of the panel included Brian Hogan (Sr. Vice President & General Manager), Craig Ritchie (Executive Producer), Dave Lumia (Digital Content Manager), Brett Hansen (Director of Marketing and Communications), Susanna Kilby (Affiliate Sales Manager) and Jamie Zissis (Account Executive). Kilby and Zissis are Cronkite School alumni.

The discussion started with the speakers giving their personal and professional background, their path in the sports industry and finally how they arrived at FOX Sports Arizona. From there, Jody moderated the discussion to allow the students to understand the ins and outs about the sports television profession. The panel then opened up for questions from the students about the industry. Students either raised their hand or tweeted in questions for the panel to answer. The questions were engaging and thought provoking for our speakers and helped showcase all that FOX Sports Arizona has to offer.

In total, the discussion lasted around 90-minute and had over 100 students in attendance.

Those in attendance reacted very positively and posted their thoughts on social media:

FOX Sports Arizona Treats Loyal Twitter Fans to D-Backs Game

FOX Sports Arizona is constantly posting on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter to promote the network while also trying to make our fans feel noticed. We enjoy engaging with fans about their favorite teams while focusing on the local sports landscape. Twitter is one of the platforms we like the most – since December 2008 we have gained nearly 45,000 followers and found it to be an effective promotional tool and a way to find out what our viewers are thinking. Some of them have been here since the beginning, while others may have just started to follow us and we enjoy the engagement they provide on a daily basis.

These positive interactions do not go unnoticed, so FOX Sports Arizona decided to reward six of our most loyal D-backs Tweeps (and a guest) with a night in our suite at the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies game on Sept. 29. It was awesome to get to interact with them and prove there is a person behind the screen who reads their tweets every day and they mean a great deal to our network. After the game (and during), the fans posted tweets about their night in our suite (they even got on TV!) and thanked us for the experience. It was truly our pleasure to thank them for their constant support!

Randy Johnson’s #51 Retirement – FOX Sports Arizona Coverage

Saturday August 8th was a day that FOX Sports Arizona, the Arizona Diamondbacks and D-backs fans have been looking forward to since the start of the 2015 season. Why? It was the  day newly inducted Baseball Hall of Famer, Randy Johnson would have his #51 retired by the D-backs. FOX Sports Arizona had the day covered extensively on televison  – and across all social media platforms as well!

Randy’s big day began at 9:30 am with FOX Sports Arizona replaying Randy Johnson’s 20 strikeout game as well as his perfect game before the jersey number retirement ceremony.

The FOX Sports Arizona Fan Express bus rolled to Chase Field from Tolleson as 50 lucky fans won two tickets to the game and the opportunity to ride on the Fan Express bus to watch the Diamondbacks take on the Cincinnati Reds on this special night.

Chase Field had a playoff type atmosphere with a crowd of over 40,000 eagerly waiting for “The Big Unit” to take the Diamondback mound one last time.

At roughly 5:00 pm, Randy took his final walk from the Diamondback bullpen to greet the anxious Chase Field crowd. Making his way to the mound, he greeted the only other D-back to have his jersey number retired – Luis Gonzalez , as well as former and current Diamondbacks front office executives Jerry Colangelo, Joe Garagiola Jr, Ken Kendrick and Derrick Hall.

Before the ceremony began, current President and CEO Derrick Hall had a gift for the Rock ‘n Roll lefty. A limited edition Rush gold plated drum set! His reaction to this generous gift was priceless.

Randy thanked all of the front office, fans and family throughout the Diamondback organization for making his experience in Major League Baseball the best time of his life.

Once the game started and the fans settled into their seats, Randy made his way up to the FOX Sports Arizona broadcast booth to join former D-backs manager Bob Brenly and Steve Berthiaume on air. Even a little friend made a visit to remind Randy about that time on March 24th 2001.

Randy was a busy man doing interviews and talk shows but his big moment of fame came during the D-backs Legends Race.  Randy Johnson let teammate Mark Grace win his first ever Legends Race. Check out our Snapchat Story for all of the exclusive coverage from Saturday night.

Although the D-backs couldn’t get a win on Randy’s jersey retirement night, the evening was unforgettable. The fans, the Rush gold plated drum set, sitting in the booth with Bob and Steve and witnessing Gracie win the Legends Race, Chase Field was the place to be and FOX Sports Arizona was the network to watch!
